The Spoils of a Randomly Discovered Book Sale

I live in a beautiful and delightfully quirky river town in New York which I found myself falling in love with all over again this weekend. Often there is quite a bit to do downtown, but I’m usually so busy I don’t notice. This lovely weekend, however, was a wonderful exception- a full 24 hours that were largely unplanned and so I ventured downtown.

My plan was to pick-up a library book on hold for me and then pick up an iced coffee before heading down to the water to read, but I was enjoyably sidetracked by all of the happenings downtown- an artwalk, a sketch mob, and the coup d’etat for a booklover, the library book sale.

Taking the opportunity to enjoy the cloudless and temperate day, I walked through town and admired some of the art. The artist I admired most along the was Kerri Lee Green, whose work actually appeared on the artwalk guide. Green is a painter, whose canvas is wood. Her scenes seem to be a nod to biblical imagery, such as the Garden of Eden, or classic artistic themes, such as Madonna and Child, but with a more modern twist. She uses muted colors, and alot of texture in her work.

I did make it back to the book sale, and though I missed out on a complete hardcover volume of O’Henry, I found a few others:

Watership Down by Richard Adams

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

The Signet Classic Book of Southern Short Stories (there is one by Edgar Allen Poe in there, casting doubts on the claim of Southern, but we shall see)

The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw

Six new books for me, a Curious George book for my nephew, a birthday gift for a friend, and two books I plan on shipping to another friend- all for $5.75. That is my kind of book shopping!

I did also retrieve my reserve item- Below Stairs: The Classic Kitchen Maid’s Memoir That Inspired Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey by Margaret Powell, and my cup of iced coffee, but both seemed to pale in the gleaming light of my booksale high, my glorious weekend surprise. 🙂

Oh, fun! One of my friends lived in a delightfully quirky river town in NY last summer, and I had a lot of fun visiting her for a weekend. I’m glad you enjoyed your weekend so much and well done on the books!
